Agency Adoptions
The primary responsibility of the agency’s adoption program is to find adoptive families for children in our care who need a family and to provide support to families after the adoption is completed.
Voluntary Placement
Occasionally a birth parent may wish to place an infant for adoption. This may be arranged through an agreement with the agency. Whether the infant is placed in a home selected by the agency or by the parent, a home study is required. Our adoption worker is available to meet with birth parents to provide information and discuss options available to them.
Children in Agency Care and Custody
Our agency and other agencies across Nova Scotia are always seeking homes for children in our care who have been permanently removed from the care of their parents. Because of their age or early experiences, these children may have special needs. We are looking for families who have the strength and ability to care for these children.
Adoption Subsidies and Support
Financial subsidies may be available for families who adopt these special children to meet the additional costs involved in their care.
Applying to Adopt
If you are interested in adopting a child, there is an approval process required, often referred to as a "home study". Once completed, your profile will be available to agencies searching for a family for a child.
If you are selected for a child, there is a process to introduce you to the child, followed by placement and a probation period. After the probation is completed, the adoption order is granted.
For information about adoption, please contact our adoption worker at the agency offices.
Other Adoptions
The agency plays a role in other types of adoptions such as Private Relative Adoptions, Interprovincial Adoptions, and International Adoptions. If you need information about these, you may speak to our adoption worker or visit the Department of Community Services website at http://www.gov.ns.ca/coms/families/adoption.html .
